Real Female Role Models
Women should seek role models who demonstrate what most women are and want out of life.

The other night Leland and I watched one of my favorite movies about real life people. Fargo was produced in 1996. It caused quite a stir in Hollywood, picking up lots of awards and honors, and garnering rave reviews from the critics and fans. The story was actually a very simple one: a series of murders are committed in a sleepy North Dakota town and the police are drawn in to investigate.
What I loved about this movie was the simplicity of the characters. Each scene was beautifully drawn, bringing out the strengths and weaknesses of the people in it. The reactions of the characters were not over the top or hammy. Any one of those people could be your average neighbor or friend.
However, the thing that impressed me the most was the Sheriff of Fargo, portrayed in this movie by an actress who was not young and stunningly beautiful. The sheriff was a woman in her mid-thirties, about to give birth to her first child. Her husband was a chubby, balding guy who looked like a real husband, rather than some sleek, bronzed God fallen to earth.
As the story unfolds, the Sheriff carries on her investigation of the murders and tries to catch the bad guys.
What I enjoyed about this woman is how grounded her character was. She doesn’t yell or get aggressive, and she isn’t trying to prove who she is. The way she investigates the crimes is simple and direct. There’s a real beauty in watching this person unravel on screen.
I think as a woman it has always bothered me how women are perceived in the world. The so called “women’s groups” that are supposed to be representing my gender seem to make the point that any woman in power is a good thing, but I disagree. Many times, the women that you see in the media are aggressive and pushy. They're striding around in their power suits and competing with the men. I can’t help but think that something is getting lost in the translation. The women’s movement in the 1970's told us that to be equal to men, we had to be just like them. But women are different than men!
So, am I supposed to identify with Hillary Clinton or Kamala Harris? Do I look at the actresses that shy away from real scripts portraying the average woman, so they can act in edgy thrillers and dramas and stomp around with a gun like the guys? What about women who put their career ambitions ahead of a good marriage and parenting? NO, these certainly aren’t the women that a woman should try to pattern herself after.
I have come across some good women in my life. Women I have seen working hard and surviving. Women who are truly happy with themselves don’t have to yell or get bitter and defensive. These are the women I would like to see sitting in the United States Senate and influencing our country in good ways. The Kamala Harris and Hillary Clinton types put on a glitzy show to convince you they are competent to represent real women, but when the fake Hollywood veneer is stripped away the truth is obvious. They live in a political world and not the world of most women. Currently, Kamala Harris is trying to win the position of President. She is a liberal socialist, an incompetent liar, and is not qualified for this office. Most women are not fooled by the Kamala’s and Hillary’s in society. What they want is Hollywood to show real women, like Fargo’s sheriff Marge Gunderson. That is what I would like to see more often on television or in the movies.
So, what happened to the Sheriff of Fargo? Marge had solved the crime. She didn’t brag about what she had done. She didn’t feel guilty. She wasn't arrogant or think she was the best because she was the sheriff. She merely went home to her husband, curled up with him and listened to him talk about his day.
Incidentally, the actress in this movie won an Academy Award for her portrayal. I would like to think the women voters saw her performance and smiled. There’s a little Marge in all of us, and that’s a good thing. By the way, most of us can see right through the Kamala’s and Hillary’s and phony women who think we are stupid enough to buy what they are pedaling. Just something to think about. Until next time… Colleen
