Personal Energy Level
For higher energy level, strive to put more energy into things you enjoy and less into things you do not like.
By Leland E Pulley
We all like to feel energetic and be happy in what we are doing. Unfortunately, this is not always the case for us on a daily basis. However, there are some things we can do to raise our energy level and get more done, plus be happier while doing so.
Energy, as I am using it here, refers to how you are feeling at the time. It is a combination of both mental thoughts and feelings about what you are doing, as well as your physical condition while doing it. Some common examples will illustrate energy level.
Many years ago, I began working at a large manufacturing facility. Very early in my assignment in the engineering department, a more experienced engineer came over to my desk and made some comments to me. In essence, he said my desk was so bare and clean because it did not have stacks of paper on it. This gave the impression that I had little to do, and it made the rest of the group look sloppy. This was over forty years ago, and I still remember the incident like it happened yesterday. The issue here is both organization and neatness. I like to organize things. It is an enjoyable activity for me. From my perspective, there is no work involved in organizing things. Thus, everything in my life is that way. I also like neatness, so everything in my life is this way. While growing up my dad always stressed having a place for everything, and when you use something, put it back where it belongs. Then another person can find it. Also, you do not have to hunt for something when you need it. I hate wasting time looking for things that I cannot find right away. Both organization and neatness are part of me. When they function in my life, they serve me well. I am more efficient and effective and can get more things done. I am more enthusiastic and happier. In essence, my energy level goes up when these variables are in place. I feel like I can take on even more projects, duties, or responsibilities.
When my wife and I agree and act together, we are both happier and accomplish more together than apart. This teamwork is a form of synergy. It energizes both of us. We want to be around each other more. We are willing to help each other without being asked. For example, even though my wife has worked full time as a nurse, she still liked to do creative cooking in the home. It seems like work to me, and I do not like to cook that much, especially when you must follow recipes and utilize fine-tuned cooking skills. On the other hand, I recognize that she knows I enjoy her cooking and wants to provide me the good fruits of her labors. This is service. This is love in action. For my part, I am very willing to always do the dishes after she does the cooking. Doing dishes is like cleaning up a mess. This is related to the organization and neatness described above. Dishes are not work for me. Cleaning up the kitchen is an energizer for me like cooking is for my wife.
Cooperation between a husband and wife, parents and children, workers on a job, or citizens in the community always seems to help people get along and accomplish more. There is more open communication, shared work, and greater trust. The positive energy that comes out of cooperation motivates people to do more.
Activities in which you have a true and personal interest also will energize you. This is why some people pursue certain hobbies or get involved in playing specific sports. They enjoy these things, or they would not be doing them. Strong interests and enjoyment turn such activities and pursuits into priorities for the individuals involved. Because of this, they do not mind spending time and money on them. In contrast, when people are doing things that do not interest them, there is less enthusiasm and willingness to participate. The energy level an individual has for such activities is much lower. Likewise, if he has to or is forced to do certain things, his energy level is even lower.
Some people are willing to take a lower paying job or less glamorous career in order to do what they truly like. They are willing to live cheaper and receive less recognition. However, they will put more into such endeavors because their energy level is higher for these. This increases the odds that they will not only be happier but excel in such jobs or careers.
To help sustain or even raise your energy level, build a support network of good relationships with family members, friends, neighbors, coworkers, and other acquaintances. These individuals can teach, guide, advise, encourage, and love you. At times their concern and efforts can make a difference in what you start and whether you can sustain your efforts long enough to succeed. As you strive to pursue an interest or do something that energizes you, their assistance can help to sustain your energy level, and in some cases raise this level. With a good support team, there is less chance of discouragement and failure. These would dampen out enthusiasm over time and lower your energy level in an area.
To further sustain energy level, continue to learn and improve. Gain knowledge and develop skills in areas of interest. Listen to people who know what they are talking about in your area of interest. Seek good role models of what you are trying to achieve or become. Such efforts will make it easier to find success in what you are trying to do. This leads to more enthusiasm, and continual efforts in the future. The rewards, besides energy level, are satisfaction, fulfillment, and happiness.
In essence, when you have an interest in something or want to be involved, your energy level for it goes up. You are more willing to participate, cooperate with others, work hard, and make the sacrifices necessary to achieve or win or excel. To test this out, consider all the things that you do in your life. Where does there appear to be high energy levels and low energy levels? High energy levels indicate more your true self and low energy levels reveal where you are more likely to be average or not perform in a satisfactory manner.
Some individuals will do anything for fame or a lot of money. They do not care whether they have the interest or not. This is not what I am discussing in this article. I am talking about you and me, and the choices we make in our daily lives. Our energy levels are quite revealing, and we should pay attention to them. Periodically, ask yourself what turns you on and what turns you off. The more time of your life spent in activities that you enjoy, the happier you will be. Your life will have more good memories, and these too will raise your energy level for doing even more good things in the future.
I challenge you to review the various roles you play, relationships you have, duties you perform, and activities you participate in currently. What is your interest, enthusiasm, and energy level for each? The more of these that you can do because you like to do it or want to do it, the better off you will be. Your overall level of energy will go up. Your outlook on life will improve. You will be more optimistic and have more positive attitudes. Who does not seek such things? To succeed in doing this merely take one step at a time. Decrease the time and effort put into a low energy level activity and transfer the time and effort saved into a higher energy level activity that you currently have or into a new area for which you have an interest. As you do this, you will gradually make a transition in your life. There will be more and more higher energy level activities and less and less lower energy activities. Do not wait but start today. With a strong and determined commitment and a smile on your face, you can improve your life in so many ways. Do not deny yourself the confidence, success, and joy that comes from doing this.
