Better Utilization of Your Mental Capabilities
With all your efforts in activities and endeavors, do not forget to improve your mental tools because this will lead to more success in everything you do.

A few years ago, I saw the movie Limitless. A young male writer was having a hard time focusing and completing a book manuscript. His girlfriend finally decided she had enough and chose to separate from him. It was then that he met on the street an old acquaintance. While having lunch together the acquaintance gave him a new type of pill, which had been developed. It was supposed to expand the mental capabilities of an individual by affecting the operation of the brain. The young writer took the pill and soon recognized that he did have increased mental power as his acquaintance had promised. He went from using twenty percent of his brain’s capability to one hundred percent. The only problem was the pill was addictive in nature, and it was hard to get hold of additional pills. Fortunately for the writer, he was able to get a supply of these pills, and this completely changed his life. He was able to remember much better all the past events in his life and the things he had been taught. He could now read faster and write better. He could learn languages easily. He finished his book manuscript and pleased the publisher with his writing. As the vision expanded of what he could do with his new mental capabilities, he decided to get involved in the investment world. It was here that he made a lot of money. During this time, he was able to go back to his old girlfriend and she became a part of his life again. Fortunately for him he had learned enough about the drug to eventually get off the addiction that it caused and yet retain increased mental capacity for his life.
Each of us only utilizes a small percentage of our total mental capability. At least this is what we are told. For example, imagine if you could go from using ten percent of your brain power to fifteen percent. This would be a significant increase and of course you may be considered a genius in some ways. This is not likely to happen to us any time soon, but we can consider ways to better utilize the mental capabilities that each of us have. Here are a few suggestions.
Take care of your physical health. Treat your body with respect and as the delicate machine it is. Eat a healthy diet and get regular exercise. Do not take into the body harmful drugs which can do permanent damage to your brain. Do not rely on prescription drugs too much so a dependency develops. Stay away from things like drinking and smoking. Alcohol, when mixed with some drugs, increases the damage done to the body and mind. Develop a pattern of regular sleep and perhaps napping at times so you are rested on a daily and weekly basis. This will help you to be more mentally awake. You will feel like doing more things and have more energy in doing them. You will think more clearly and accurately when you are rested and in good health.
Monitor your mental health also.
Be aware of headaches and what causes them in your life. The same thing goes for depression, if you experience this.
Reduce stress in all the ways you can.
If you are not happy on a consistent basis, figure out why, and take steps to become happier.
Avoid too much mental clutter, which interferes with clear thinking and good decision-making.
Stop worrying so much, especially when there are variables beyond your control.
Instead of being indecisive, make definite decisions and then carry them out. Set goals and make plans for achieving them. This will help you to have some structure in your life.
Let there be balance in your life. Make sure you have productive activities as well as fun things to do.
All these things represent simple yet important ways to streamline and improve your thought processes. This will lay a foundation for increased mental activity which can be focused on a broader variety of topics, as well as a higher level of performance in mental activities.
Develop or enhance your skills in learning. Observe carefully what is going on in your environment. Become a good listener. Learn how to read and edit faster. Become more proficient in picking out the main ideas in an article, lecture, or book. Let there be continual learning and mine development throughout your life. In other words, keep yourself mentally challenged and your mind active until you die. This not only improves lifestyle, but you will be happier and live longer too.
Broaden out your experiences over time. This will provide a basis for developing comparisons and therefore judgment. You will be able to see things from more perspectives. You will gain wisdom and make more right choices.
Timing is critical. Monitor your daily living cycle and look for patterns in weekly and monthly cycles. When do you like to do certain things? When are you the sharpest mentally during the day? This is the time to do those more challenging and difficult mental tasks. Learn to take breaks from mental activity so you can return to it refreshed and ready to move forward. Do not try to study a lot when you are sleepy or tired. Do not put a lot of pressure on yourself because you waited until the last minute to do something. Here is an example of timing from my life. While at college I noticed that I would get stuck on an engineering problem. I would put it away and do something else. Overnight it seemed my mental computer would work on the problem. The next day things were clearer and a way to solve the problem would come to me.
Learn to see or recognize relationships between things so you can connect things together that are related. This will help you to remember better, as well as utilize the information you have. This leads to greater understanding and simplifying the complexity of the world you live in. With more understanding comes the ability to make better choices.
Have plenty of stimulation. Read on a variety of topics. Develop skills in different areas. Interact with different types of people. Travel to different areas. All these things and more are stimulating and will increase your capacity to absorb information and utilize it effectively in your life. Here are some examples of stimulation from my life. I can be reading about something, and thoughts about a similar or related topic will come to my mind. Without reading this would not happen. I like to do public speaking and teaching. In both cases, as I am talking, my mind is opened further and additional or new thoughts come to it. Without doing these two activities, additional stimulation does not come. This same thing occurs while interacting with others. During mutual conversations or discussions, I have the chance to explain things, and this generates new thoughts in my mind. At the same time, I get to listen to what others are saying and learn from them. Without such interaction, additional simulation and learning would not occur.
There is also meditation to help you focus and develop self-discipline of the mind. Along with this comes prayer and getting answers for your concerns and questions. Let your conscience be your guide in daily decisions. If you develop a sensitivity to it. You will feel good about what you do that is right and bad when what you do is wrong. Beyond this there are actual spiritual prompts that can enter your mind and tell you things. I have received many such prompts. Following such prompts leads to more right choices.
Mental organization is valuable. Learn to store information in an organized way in your mind so it is easy to recall when you need it. This will improve memory and provide easier access to information when you need it.
Finally, remember this if you want to better utilize your mental capabilities. Do not merely seek information and a variety of experiences. But seek truth. It is true and useful information that is most valuable. This type of information can be relied upon, and when applied in your life, produces the best results.
Keep your total life under control. Do not take upon yourself too many responsibilities and commitments. You will end up being in a hurry and buried by routines. This will overshadow good mental utilization. Your schedule will control you and there will be less effort put into creative activities. A simplified lifestyle always allows for more time to focus mentally and apply your best brainpower to whatever task, project, or endeavor you choose to get involved in.
There is a lot of information today on enhanced mental development. Specific techniques and strategies are emphasized. But before utilizing these, analyze your life and use some common sense in doing what you can do right now for enhancing your mental capabilities. Take the suggestions given in this article and add to them what you know and have experienced. Let this be your foundation and then add to it the techniques and strategies proposed by others which you may choose to utilize or not. In following this approach, your mind will become clearer and operate more efficiently. Your thought patterns will improve in both content and usefulness. You will be learning more and applying new truths in your life to accomplish your goals and have a better lifestyle. You will be smarter because you are more in charge and less mistakes are made.
I challenge you to review your mental capabilities and decide what is hindering them and what is enhancing them. Then set some goals to help you think better and perform better so you will be more successful in your various endeavors.
